Discovered by Portugal in the late 15th century and later joined to Spain,
Equatorial Guinea became independent in 1968. Masie Nguema Biyogo, from
the mainland, became President for Life in 1972 after much civil strife.
Masie's rule was brutal and cruel leaving the country bankrupt and in
disarray. 7,000 Europeans fled in 1976 and Nigerians were evacuated. Masie
was overthrown in a military coup in 1979.
